EDIT: This is intended to be a companion piece to my recent National Geographic story about small-scale breeders focused on health, who take responsibility for their puppies for life. I’ve tried to edit a little to make that more clear—I should have made a greater distinction. This is not at all an endorsement of puppy mills or other breeding operations that do not take health and welfare seriously.

Thanks for the clarification. I never saw the NG piece. But shelters are overwhelmed at the moment. Intake is up more than 70% on dogs. Euthanasia is high. Why go to any breeder right now? Every small breeder I know breeds too much. They can’t resist more than one litter a year.
